We will study this ancient text that continues to enliven our practice today.

What does opening the heart of great wisdom of compassion mean to us individually and as a community?

We will explore how opening the heart of great wisdom of compassion serves the world and the arising conditions around suffering. How do we move this heart of wisdom and compassion from the zendo into where we live?

The class  will open with zazen and chanting the heart sutra. There will be conversations in dyads and in the larger group inviting all voices into the circle of this exploration. We’ll use several texts and translations of the Heart Sutra including: Buddhist Wisdom: Translation and Commentary by Edward Conze, The Heart Sutra: Translation and Commentary by Red Pine,  The Buddhist Teaching of Totality: Garma C.C. Chang and The Anguttara Nikaya.  We will also explore different translations of the Heart Sutra chant.

This offering is for everyone.  The aim of the class is to invite all to touch into the heart of this sutra.

Suggested Text: The Heart Sutra: A comprehensive guide to the Classic of Mahayana Buddhism, Kazuaki Tanahashi
