Othering
Sunday dharma talk by Kyoku Tracey Walen, June 25, 2017.
Kyoku Tracey Walen says “othering” is a good term for what we all do in difficult situations with other people. We get irritated, so we look for someone to blame — an “other” — but that is the basis of suffering and a terrible prison for ourselves. She encourages us to see both sides — the “other’s” and our own — in a dispute. Find ways to approach frustration without automatically blaming someone or something else. Use duality, the ability to see both sides, in your practice.
