One of Buddha’s earliest teachings is the 12 Links of Dependent Origination.  It was introduced just after the 4 Noble Truths and the first turning of the dharma wheel and is part of the image in the Wheel of Life and Death. The Visuddhimaga, a classic book of practice based on the original teachings of the Buddha, introduces breaking the grip of Dependent Origination as an important step in the path of karmic purification.

The 12 links of dependent origination is Buddha’s gift to teach us how to see into our personal psychology.  He refers to this teaching as his self portrait.  The early monasteries posted the images associated with this teaching at the entryway for the practitioner to see as they came and went from monastery.

This is a liberation teaching and is meant to be worked with using the concentration we develop in our meditation.  In this class we will introduce how the 12 links refer to our mental states, how to use the teaching in our lay life and how to work with the teaching in conjunction with other core teachings of the Buddha.
