To participate in a Zoom sesshin requires arranging your life and home space in a way that is conducive to silent meditation. We recognize that this is challenging for many of you, so we are offering a lot of flexibility for our Zoom participants.

Sesshin Teachers:
Myo On Susan Hagler – Myo On is a member of the teacher ryo at Clouds in Water Zen Center. For Myo On Susan Hagler, friendliness, open heartedness and aspiring to be “Yes” are the foundations of her practice. She began practicing at MZMC with Katagiri-Roshi in 1980, receiving jukai from him in 1982. She practiced formally there until early 1986 when she married and began her family with her spouse Duane Peterson. They have 3 adult children and 3 young grandchildren. In 1999, she took up formal Zen practice once more at MZMC and was ordained by Tim Burkett in 2003. In 2010, she continued her priest training with Dokai Georgesen at Hokyoji Zen Practice Community and received Dharma Transmission from him in 2018. Myo On has had the opportunity to practice at all the Twin Cities area sanghas and is currently teaching at Clouds, which she joined in early 2019. She is also on the staff at Hokyoji. Flexibility and meeting what arises are principles Myo On endeavors to in all aspects of her life.

Dokai Georgesen – To Dokai Georgesen, guiding teacher of Hokyoji Zen Practice Community, “the appropriate response” is an essential aspect of his practice and thus his life. Lately he’s been focusing on connecting with the deep joy that unfolds as one’s practice deepens. He began his study of Zen Buddhism at Minnesota Zen Meditation Center under the direction of Katagiri-Roshi in 1974. He spent two years on pilgrimage studying Buddhism in India and Japan, and upon his return in 1982 he lived at Hokyoji until his ordination in 1984. In 1989, he received Dharma Transmission from Katagiri-Roshi, and subsequently practiced in Japan with notable teachers there. Dokai had the opportunity to study with Thich Nhat Hanh at Plum Village in France as well. He began residing at Hokyoji in June, 2003 under the auspices of MZMC. In 2007, Hokyoji became an independent practice center, at which time Dokai became Hokyoji’s guiding teacher.

Zoom participation cost:
This is a “pay what you can” sesshin and it is also a “come when you can” sesshin. While some of you may be able to participate in full days, or even all seven days, we know that this will not be possible for everyone. We are happy to have you join us in whatever way works for you. The value of the Zoom sesshin is estimated to be $100/day.

You will be sent a Zoom link and other welcome materials one to two days before the start date of the sesshin.
