Lojong Slogans: Training in Compassion
With Myoshin Diane Benjamin
Mondays, Sept 27 – Nov 1
Pay what you can, minimum $5
The lojong slogans offer a wonderful way to practice beyond the meditation cushion with the every day situations we encounter.
In this online class, we will cultivate compassion by training our minds as taught through the seven points and 59 slogans of the 12th century Tibetan text, The Root Text of the Seven Points of Training the Mind, or Lojong. We will also learn and practice tonglen, or giving and receiving meditation, a method of expanding our capacity to be present with our own and others’ suffering.
The class will include meditation, reading, discussion, and encouragement to practice daily with the slogans.
“Spiritual practice, exactly like training in a gym, takes time and effort. Just as there are stationary bicycles, treadmills, weight machines, and other devices, so in spiritual practice there is prayer, meditation, ritual, study, and other techniques. Using these steadily over time, we can change our minds. We can begin to notice our unsuccessful repetitive patterns of thinking and feeling. We can begin to see their consequences. … We can begin to cultivate new ways of thinking, feeling, speaking, and acting and gradually make them more and more our own. Our basic patterns over time will be different as we train our minds with intentional techniques and practices, and this will influence our relationships and our sense of ourselves and the world.” -Norman Fischer
We will use the book Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong, by Norman Fischer, as our guide. Please purchase a copy of this book prior to the first class.
