Description:
The Other Shore: Teachings on the Heart Sutra

We are excited to once again offer sesshin at the beautiful Hokyoji Zen Practice Community, located among the forested hills of southeastern Minnesota, just a few miles from the Mississippi River. At this retreat, we will be diving deeply into the teachings of the Heart Sutra, guided by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s translation of the sutra, and his commentary on it. Supported by the hills and valleys, fields and forest, we will sit deeply with the teachings of interbeing, no-self, emptiness, signlessness, and aimlessness. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, “The Heart Sutra is a deep and important text, which has the capacity to bring us to the shore of liberation, happiness, and peace.”

The sesshin will be led by guiding teacher Sosan Theresa Flynn and Lay teacher Myoshin Diane Benjamin. Many other members of the Clouds in Water teacher ryo will also be present at this sesshin.

Each sesshin day typically includes 10 – 12 zazen periods (25 to 30 minutes each), chanting services, a dharma talk, formal oryoki meals, outdoor activities, work practice and service assignments. Dokusan (individual face-to-face meetings with the teachers) will be offered two or three times during the week. Training in the forms will be provided as part of the sesshin.

While sesshin practice can be challenging, Hokyoji’s tranquil meadows, woodlands, and bluffs offer guests a peaceful setting that invites relaxation, inspiration, and renewal.
