The Ten Essential Precepts: April 11 – June 13

The Ten Essential Precepts
Thursdays, April 11th-June 13th
6:30 – 8: 30 pm
Teachers: Sosan, MyoOn, Myoshin and Koji

The ten essential precepts are guidelines for how a compassionate being acts in the world. Engaging with these precepts helps us discern whether our actions are beneficial or harmful, wholesome or unwholesome. In this class, we will encourage each other to find the best way to express ethical behavior in our lives. We will explore the question: How can we live these precepts in a non-rigid manner that is at the same time thorough and deep? This is an excellent class for many types of students: those new to the practice, those who have been practicing for a while, and those who are candidates for the Jukai* ceremony this fall. The classes will include short dharma talks, group discussions, guided meditations, and mindfulness exercises.

Main texts:

Diane Rizzetto:  Waking Up to What You Do

Reb Anderson:  Being Upright

*Jukai is a ceremony where students formally receive the precepts. Registration for the jukai ceremony in fall of 2024 is already closed, but if you want to get on the list for 2026 jukai, please let us know.

“We know in our hearts that there is a different way to be, a different way to live. Our generosity with one another is indeed resistance to the greed and fear that oppresses us. We provide for one another out of love for each other and love for ourselves. When we give, we acknowledge that all beings want to be happy.”
